Hi all
I am due to graduate this summer with a degree in forensic computing from De Montfort University, and i am looking to get a job asap. The issue that i am having is getting my foot through the door, and was wondering for some advice on where to look for graduate jobs, as pretty much every job i have looked at requires experience.
During my final year at university i have had experience in carrying out mobile phone forensics using Oxygen, XRY, and XACT. So i would like to go into either mobile phones or computer forensics. I have also had experience using Encase and FTK through out my time at university.
I am based in Nuneaton (Midlands) and wouldn't mind commuting, any help or advice would be much appreciated.
Thanks
Saj.
Contact David Sullivan from Appointments UK. He should be able to give you some sound advice.
As a side note let me tell you how things went for me.
In the December before I completed university I called every forensic computing company I could find and asked them directly if they employed graduates. By doing this I was able to land an interview with a company and was able to start work with them 4 days after my final exam. I found that people who waited until after their exams struggled as the number of graduates competing for jobs is quite large.
I'd start calling now.
PM me some contact details and I'll pass you details on to my mentor as we are looking for grads
I have posted a job based in Nottingham that would be suitable for you, see the vacancies forum!
Is it possible to start looking for jobs too early?
I still have one more year of "Secure and Forensic Computing" (starting in September).
I have had a look around but have not directly contacted any companies to see if they employ graduates.
Like Saj_188, all of the jobs I have come across all state that experience is required.
hi there mate, im due to start forensic computing in september at DMU and was wondering if you could give some thoughts on your experience on the course?
i've been out of education for 3 years now since my A levels but Im keen to learn more about this particular field.
Also do you have any suggestions as to how I might prepare for study?
Thanks

I applied for that. Have you made any decisions yet or would it be wise to get in touch this coming week?

That wouldn't happen to be QinetiQ would it? I recall you recommending them to me. It just so happens I had a telephone interview with them yesterday.

I have been studying secure and forensic computing at Huddersfield University.
During the first 2 years of the course I have not actually touched anything forensics based, besides a quick dabble with encase once. (apparently this has changed now according to some first years i have spoken to).
I am currently on a work placement in Italy, and will be returning in a month to prepare for starting my final year, which surprisingly only has one real forensics module.
I have been slightly disappointed with the course, as it has not really gone into any great depth surrounding forensics, which is what i was hoping for.
This may not necessarily be the case at your chosen university, this is only my experience.
saj any comments from you mate?
Hi Tom619
Sorry for late reply. To be honest the course has the potential to be really good. Just as we finished they had installed the software to carry out mobile phone forensics (XRY, Oxygen) they also have a secure forensic lab and the machines are fantastic. You will also get a 2 day training on how to be an expert witness from Bond Solon. More than likely they will change the modules for when you start to the ones which i did, as they have done each year.
With regards to preparing for study what i suggest is, that you read up on the ACPO guidelines, look at Encase, Netkit (Virtual Network), also get to grips with Linux (Ubuntu). SQL, programming in C.
To be honest with you if you stay on top of things you will be fine. If you need any help, or advice just PM me.
