We see loads of failures from drives that leak oil

Loads? I've dealt with a fair few HDDs over the years but oil leaking I've yet to see. Is there a type or brand of drive which your lab finds leak oil more than others?

I use WD. A few years ago I used to use Maxtor which started failing every few months. I think I had a Samsung go bang too.

Of course, the Allegro actually means that ALL Austin/British Leyland (with the only exception of the original Mini) are BAD!

My take?
Samsung manufactured in Korea (NOT China)
Hitachi - preferably manuf. in Thailand, although we haven't had significant problems with those manufactured in China. Yet.
We definitely advise against Western Digital, Seagate, Maxtor, and most certainly anything that says LaCie or Formac or OneTouch.
