I guess you could manually write a bunch of zeros with dd multiple times, but Eraser is free and does it automatically.

Another vote for Logicube Talon. Works a treat and gives you a printable report with drive type, serial number, etc.

I like the Wiebetech drive eRazer Pro as a hardware device. I use a couple of different sofware programs for drives types that the eRazer doesn't support.
