Anyone experimented with low cost drive destructions?
Exclude shredding and taking it apart, anyone been able to build a home grown degaussed, or similar?
Don't laugh, but I tried regular self-cleaning ovens in "clean" mode. Definitely makes a huge mess, but it seems to be efficient as I can put quite a lot of them in it.
A friend of mine did a lot of work in this area and set up a business based on some lower tech options. Drop me a line and I'll put you in touch with him.

Why exclude shredding? We have a Stop n' Shred where you can do a Bankers Box full for $10-15.
I am trying to make something for myself, for experimental and growth reasons.
I figured shredding was more time consuming and requires more maintenance.
I also am thinking of kicking of a business, but want to use solutions that are not completely out of my financial realm.
Thanks for the offer David.
You have to take the case off to shred the platters. This can get pretty labor intensive. Some of the cases use normal screws, but we ran into some that required a special driver bit.
Also, how will Stop n' Shred feel about you running some of the older metal platters through their shredders?

This is a fairly comprehensive way of ensuring that the data aint coming back!

So far Stop n' Shred just dumps the box out on the conveyor and runs everything through. They take everything paper with staples, paperclips, binder clips CD/DVDs, HDDs whatever and you end up with a pile of shredder stuff. I have to admit it makes a horrid sound and I am glad it is not my shredder, but it certainly qualifies as destroyed when they are finished.
Industrial shredders and furnaces would be the quickest way. The bonus is the few cents worth of scrap each drive would result in.
libertate, it would depend if this was for home or business use.
ie
Home; drive a large axe thro the drive. Business; you would get tired real soon.
If its a business idea maybe this.
A company setup in the UK uses a big van with a mechanical destroyer in the back, self powered if need be.
They drive to the customer, do the relevant paperwork, pop the drives in, small pieces come out. These can be disposed of in compliance with the law, an eco-friendly way.
This sort of setup ensures customer confidence that the drives weren't moved on for profit, or someone forgot to to wipe them properly, or the algorithm was dodgy.

Kind of fun if you have never seen one in action
Or if you are going the vehicle mounted solution
