If I may give my opinion in the matter, the problem seems to me somehow reversed. 😯

I mean, it seems to me that the good guys that made Helix became (for whatever reasons, I am not going to judge their decisions) somewhat greedy and changed the "model" for the availability/distribution of the build.

Though I am not familiar with the distro, nor with it's history, I simply hate when projects for which there were "fan support" and "free contributions" become payware, with whatever "form", like yearly subscription or lifetime license or whatever.

I find that building from it's ashes a new "open" and "free" distro D is worth a better name to distinguish it from the old and from the "forked from the old path" version.

Something like
CORKSCREW
(a working helix)

or
SPIRAL
(a smooth helix)

or
COCLEA
(a helix to extract data)

Would be more distinguishable/distinctive.

I don't know if D.R.A.F.T. is the best name for it. It might make people think that it's never finished (ex. Gmail BETA). Maybe taking the same words the acronym is based on and doing it a different way, like ReconFT or something (that was off the top of my head).

As for the whole Helix3 going subscription, I can't really offer an opinion, because I didn't really use the tool enough to justify stating one. I think the only issue I have with it is that they are asking for money for something that hasn't been released yet. They would be better off saying once the Helix3 product is ready to be released, we'll close off the free download of the old version. I think you should know what you are paying for before you pay for it.

Spiral's cool.

I like it too… a quick search of "spiral linux" in google turns up almost nothing (there are a few utils called spiral that draw spirals on the screen).

If you have both the windows utils and linux utils in your distro, the name "double sprial" would probably be appropriate as well. Unique, but with enough of a hint of Helix…

good luck,

It is easy to rant and make assertions as to the motives of e-fense.

Despite the claims, the changed model isn't about making huge profits, getting greedy or turning our backs on helix supporters. All very easy to make claims.

It is simply about being able to survive as an organisation and continue to deliver quality products.

Sure it's easy, that's why I carefully tried to avoid ranting, never said they were going to make huge profits, or turning backs to anyone.

I am sorry if the "somewhat greedy" was felt like an offence, it wasn't meant as such.

I am sure that you (I presume you are part of the organisation) have your own good and rightful reasons and motivations to change the "model".

I never used Helix, will probably never use it, nor HelixCE or whatever it will be called, so, as explicitly said, I am not judging the decision made, but, without ranting, I can state my general opinion about Freeware/Open Source things going "Payware".

You might however know the old Latin saying
http//en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ex_officio#E

excusatio non petita accusatio manifesta

More loosely, 'he who excuses himself, accuses himself'—an unprovoked excuse is a sign of guilt.

Mmmm, a little harsh, I think? I don't believe going payware *necessarily* means you're being greedy (even "somewhat"). It seems to me Wardy was well within his rights to put up at least some kind of defence 😉

Again, if any offence was taken, I am sorry about it, it wasn't meant to.

I guess that now everything is cool, no feathers are ruffled, and the sun is shining. )

On the community subject.
E-fense sent out and email saying they are extending the pre release pricing until the end of april.

"The Helix3 community has reached out and asked for us to continue to offer the Helix3 membership at the pre-release $179/year price. This community has made Helix3 the most downloaded and used computer forensics application. We want to listen to this important community AND ensure the ongoing success of Helix3."

Now I commend E-fense on the attempt but shouldn't they have been listening to the community from the beginning?
I apologize if I offended anyone. My rant was very opinionated.

This community has made Helix3 the most downloaded and used computer forensics application.

Really?

Hmm … and Guidance Software's marketing department would have you believe EnCase is the most used computer forensics application. (Heck, a host of other software providers would have you believe their product to be the most downloaded and most used for that matter!)

Truth in advertising?

Doesn't anyone believe in honesty and just being truthful without hype and meaningless statistics?

Anyone?

Bueller?

😉

Cheers!
