hi there, im trying to gather information on sat nav forensics and hopefullyput together some tools to do the job. So far i have been researching tomtom (as i have acess to these models). However i want to branch out. Has anyone seen/ had experiance with any other models and could share their findings. As i cant afford to buy each sat nav model if anyone has image files of other sat nav models that they may have researched "and are willing to share the information" then if you could contact me and i could arrange to obtain them?

…..I know im asking a lot from you guys and i understand if no one has any available but i just thought it might be a little cheaper than going and buying each model.

if anyone has any thoughts on the idea?

thanks guys

Greetings,

Most modern GPS units have the ability to store tracks and waypoints. There is a lot of proprietary and free software for downloading this information from a variety of units, and uploading that information as well.

I'd do research on "GPS tracks waypoints software" and go on eBay and buy up a bunch of older units to work with.

I think you'll find that the interfaces are pretty standard, at least for the handheld units that I've worked with.

i am really new to sat nav forensics and i have come across a few tools but what is research like for this topic as a whole? is it just a case of see what you get then do the research yourself as to how it works? i mean i think im being naive here but is a similar internal structure to most sav navs or does it just depend on the manufactureer?

Try looking at www.gpsbabel.org for a tool to download (and convert) a wide variety of formats. You will have to devise and test your own methodology for most of the GPS devices out there. There's a lot of them and very little published information on forensically examining them.
