Hi. I am looking for a one or two persons to help me finish up a HDD/optical media technical report targeted at novice-to-intermediate forensicators and technical support staff. It is hoped this report will be of use to the community, but it's much harder to write than I originally thought. There's lots of really bad information out there and weeding out the very little good from the bad is a big job. The report is largely written (a couple of sub-sections need to be written from scratch and a few others have started taking form). If you know lots&lots&lots about HDDs and/or optical media and like writing then maybe we should talk? This report is software agnostic; we don't want to write about software solutions, just the theory and underlying knowledge. Anyone who helps will get their real_name & real_company/real_organization added to the cover page as a co-author(s). Also, I am making NO money off this paper - I am writing 80% of it on my own time outside work as a pet project. However, it will be published through my employer and made publicly available. Anyone who wishes to remain anonymous need not reply. The final paper will be for unlimited (free) distribution. Thanks.

Sounds interesting ) .

Not too sure if I qualify for the "lots&lots&lots" ? , however we may talk as well.

I think if I was doing this, I would want to narrow the field down rather more. Disk investigation is enormous, and something too general may not help anyone.

Possible areas - and I am sure there are many many more - might include

Accessing media with physical issues
Finding deleted files
Hidden files
Hidden areas on media
SSD
Corrupted media, reformatted media
Encryption
File fragmentation
Time lines
Logs
File systems
Operating systems
email systems
Quick evaluation of a drive when received
etc etc

It might help to decide on the area of investigation, eg corporate fraud, CP, phishing etc
