hidden files and folders not working

hi all,

recently i got a problem in my computer.because it doesnt allow me to chek the show hidden files check box. i did some registry edits and even format the machine twice but it didn work out. do you guys knw how to resolve this issue..

Are you sure you haven't got/had a virus. That's the sort of thing that viruses commonly mess up.

Ditto what Rich said, a few malware affect admin\registry access. Had one recently that wouldn't let me open control panel and it needed a clean install. (Didn't have time or inclination to trace it).

i have installe norton internet security and it didn catch the virus.is there any suggestion where i can get some close help

Quite a bit of malware hides from and disables tools designed to detect the threat. So Norton may be thwarted.

Are you familiar with Hijack-This or Sysinternals Process Explorer? Those programs would certainly allow a better analysis of what is running and what may be causing the issue. Of course wiping the drive and starting from scratch is often faster and results in a cleaner system, unless you really want to know the cause of the problem. In that case you could clone the drive and analyze it later once you are running.

You did not see anything in the log? Do you have your Hijack-This log?

yeah i have the log with me. and even i have tried with some registry editing things but that also didn work out well.

Am I right in thinking that when you say you formatted the machine twice you mean you formatted the drive and installed a fresh operating system?

If so how can it be malware???

crutey thats true i did it twise but the problem is still there. even i have install some antivirus prducts and scan the whole thing.but still didn work out.
