Hi I wonder how BMC files are working. I know that a lot of schools are using some kind of software that needs to be running on student's computers while taking tests from home. After completion of the test the student shut this software down and it creates a file with the ending .bmc, the sofware. Afterwards the students need to upload the .bmc file aswell as their exam.

What exactly are the schools monitoring? And how could students read these files to see how they can tell what the student did on the computer?

… some kind of software ….

Very accurate identification of the involved program. roll

I guess that you should ask to the actual schools.

I am pretty sure that the idea is that students are NOT intended to be reading those files 😯 .

Thank you for your input. I asked the school and they told me that they are monitoring what the student is doing on his/her computer.

The software is called behaviorforensics.exe and once you open it, it is just a little icon down to the right on the icon tray. As soon as you close this program it creates a example.bmc file in the program directory..

Thank you for mentioning that students aren't supposed to open these files.

Is there any other person at this forum (that are willing to help) that might know how this is working?

Good.
What happens if you right click on the .exe file and select "properties"?
Any company/manufacturer name?

From the description you made of it it (and it's intended scope) seems to me like it is a sort of "recorder", so that the activity of the student on the PC while taking the exam is monitored/logged.
What is logged may be either (simpler) keystrokes on the keyboard or (more complex) screenshots (at periodical intervals) or even an actual "video" of the screen, and/or the programs (not entirely unlike Task Manager) that are running.

This is clearly a "home made" software. Not much info on it. I would say that some IT guy made it in visual studio for exam occasions.

Since it is outputting a file rather small file I eliminated the thought that it is capturing video. If I run the program for 3 hours the output will be around 900 KB, this is also very small for pictures? I tried to run the .bmc in a bitmap cache image viewer but all I got was grainy pictures..

Any ideas anyone?

Can you share the first and last 100 bytes, or so, of the .bmc file?

Is it possible to attach a file to a post here or do I need to upload it to a hosting site?

Hosting site, better if you compress the file into a .zip archive.
