Hi guys. Im doing an investigation into virtual machines in particular VMWare and any related files that teh VM creates, for a university project. As part of my work i have to investigate how VM's work. Iv looked loads of places on the interent but cant really find in detail how the virtual machines work. I want to know in particular how the software uses the hardware to set up a VM enviroment for an operating system. Really im just after an explanation of a the over-all functions involved in VM's. Any help given would be greatly appreciated!

that really doesnt tell me much does it? I was after details of how virtual machines work. How drivers are utilised if any. How the software works etc
Call the vendor??
Wouldn't be better/easier to change "focus"?
Instead of VMware (Proprietary) shift your attention to Qemu (Freeware and Open Source)

Quite extensively documented, and using "simpler" virtual hardware and BIOS.
