Or instead of giving $80 to forum spammers, people could use the free Recuva.

Or a "better" app, still freeware or free for personal use.
Mind you, in my experience Recuva is a nice app ) , but it does have (or maybe had) this quirk about saying it recovered something that wasn't recovered at all, see

My personal idea of data recovery is however to throw at the thingy whateveer piece of recovery software you can putt your hands on as sometimes one tool finds more than another, or, if you prefer never trust only one tool/approach.
