Is backtrack in the VM?
When you plug the usb in, is it into a 3.0 port or 2.0? Use 2.0
Does a message pop up when you plug it in?

Upper right there should be icons like a external drive right click and hit connect.

You need to install the Extension Pack in Virtual Box if you want USB support in your VM. The Extension Pack is available on the VB downloads page just below the link to the main program.
