I've run into a backup folder size 30GB's which was generated from an IBM computer using a native application called Rescue and Recover. Found 2 versions of software developed by IBM to run on WIndows XP 32bit and vista 32/64 however when I install it on a support OS the installer errors stating the tool is only supported on a IBM machine.

Questions
1. Have any of you run into this type of backup?
2. If so is there a way to get the IBM software to work on a non-ibm machine or is there a 3rd party tool?

I've looked high and low with no luck but I was hoping someone had a trick.

Thanks!

AFAIK/AFAICR Rescue and recover is/was about restore hidden partitions
http//www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Rescue_and_Recovery
(though it does have a "backup feature")

There are several versions
http//support.lenovo.com/en_US/detail.page?LegacyDocID=MIGR-54483

Rescue and Recovery versions 1.0, 2.0, 3.0, 3.1, 4.0, 4.1 and 4.2

Here is 4.21
http//support.lenovo.com/en_US/detail.page?LegacyDocID=MIGR-73617

Rescue and Recovery Version 4.3 is the new version for Windows 7
http//support.lenovo.com/en_NZ/detail.page?LegacyDocID=MIGR-73612

But we are seemingly already at version 4.50
http//support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?&DocID=DS012810

Maybe you can find some meaningful info in these docs
http//support.lenovo.com/en_US/guides-and-manuals/detail.page?&LegacyDocID=MIGR-73446

I suspect that exact version is vital to be able to access those files, but I don't think, even if you manage to have the "right version" installed or a non-Lenovo machine, that you can do with it mcuh more that restore the machine.

Update
did a quick check with Uniextract and 7zip and a number of files can be actually extracted from the .exe, and from the .msi inside it, so it is possible that (with a LOT of work) one can have it somehow working.
The "RestoreNow.exe" has an option to restore single files.

Thanks for the response. The applications from IBM's website will not work unless you are on a supported IBM machine. There are several options in RR which allow a restore to a certain point or an extract of select files. I just can't run it since I don't have an IBM.

Can you please elaborate on your "Update"? What are you viewing with 7zip/uniextract? The backup files? What exe or msi are you referring to?

On the suspect system i'm seeing 10 folders 0-9 each roughly 8/14 GB's in size. Looks like they may be incremental backups.

Thanks!

I am referring to two of the ones I posted a link for, files
tvtrnr42_1016en.exe
and
tvtvrnr450_025en.exe

With tinkering a bit with universal extractor and 7-zip it is possible to extract the contents of the installer files.

There are a number of files that (maybe) can be manually - if not "properly" installed - made to work even on non-IBM machines.

The largish .TVT files that you can get from those are actually password protected .zip files and they contain the contents of a "boot CD", more exactly a PE 1.x (the older version) and a PE 2.x or 3.x (the newer version).

Finding the password for the archive is relatively easy using the known plain text attack (the files are compressed with zip.exe from Infozip).

Whether the contents can somehow be made to run on a non-IBM machine (only to access those files) is to be tested, of course.

Have you checked the actual files you have in a hex editor?
Maybe they are also a form or another of a ZIP file.

P.S.
Version 3.1
http//support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=DS003436
Version 3.01
http//support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=DS014145
Version 4.23
http//support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=DS012872
http//support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=DS012805
there are seemingly a zillion more versions/subversions and patches/updates for them
