Identify bug transmitter manufacturer

Hello,

I have a photo of an unidentified bug transmitter that has been edited hiding an identifiable mark on the bug which may show its user organization. The device in question does not seem to be a custom (homemade) device because of the way in which the marking on case has been distorted. Could be ID for user or manufacture which would tie back to user/org.

I really have no idea where to start or who to ask. Googled, spoke with some radio techs. etc… I know LEA. are usually first contact but in this case it may not be the best course of action to take. What concerns me is it doesn't appear to be a 'spy gadget' but a professional piece of equipment.

Thanks for any advice.

Are there any markings on the device whatsoever? Are you able to take it apart to see if there are any markings inside the camera to indicate the manufacturer or an FCC ID?

Thanks for the reply kastajamah. No there are no other markings, photo only and its been shopped. I was never in possession of device but I do know where it was planted. Cable residue and foil etc… were left behind. Shopped bug photo was discovered by accident, maybe, unsure…

I guess my question should have been which organization or who (working with this type of equipment) could advise an 'open source' direction to take. The main reason is the shopped ID in the bug photo indicates to me that pro's are involved making it difficult to go through normal channels, at least in my area. We have a corruption problem…

Thank you for helping.

Such a bug usually has a frequency from a few Khz to Ghz, you could try it with a cheap scanner to at least try to get the frequency of it to try to determine if it is something you could build yourself or some professional type of equipment.

Questions you should ask yourself (and not answer on the forum)
- Any integrated circuits on the inside that identify the chip, if any present?
- Any fingerprints on the bug itself?
- What is the location like? Is it near a window or a closed room? Is the area you are in fenced off with guards requiring a high energy transmission (etc). Signals degrade with objects in the way and need a clear Line of sight to be sent.

Take pictures of it from all 6 directions. Left, right, up, down, front, back. Do a google image search with the pictures.

If you suspect industrial espionage - or worse, best bet would be to contact to your national security services (if you're US like your profile says then that would be the FBI). This is probably not a case that you can pull off on your own without specialist skills.

I believe the OP already tried a cheap scanner on the photo 😯 (the ONLY thing he has in his hands) but somehow the picture wasn't transmitting anything wink .

Maybe putting a picture of a power supply or of a battery next to the picture of the bug may help …. 😯

Nothing meaningful/useful I am afraid ( .

I understand how you might want/need to omit details, but maybe if - besides providing an actual link to the photo (since you already shared it somewhere else that shouldn't be a problem) - you could give some context it would be easier for members of the board to try and help you.

Why not try the experts?

There are lots of companies out there who sell this type of device (not necessarily this exact device) who may have the field knowledge required. Which are present in your country or area … I can't say, but googling for 'covert surveillance camera' may provide some leads. Similar equipment may be used for related purposes – say, hunting – and sold through stores for hunters. Or naturalists.

There are also people who specialize in counter-surveillance, which may be closer to your question. (Not just selling tech, but actually doing it.) Again, googling might be useful … though I suspect trade press may be better.

And i believe that someone is unable to determine when someone else made a post by ignoring timestamps on forums.
