I've been studying and learning a lot about the CF field over the past couple of months..but I've noticed there are not that many sites devoted to CF. ForensicFocus is probably the best site I have found to date.

Let's say you were going to start a new CF site…what would you want on it? What do you think a lot of CF sites are missing? etc…

For me

** I would like to see case studies from the beginning to the end. I know for security reasons you cant give out exact information but there is still a lot of information people can give out just generalizing or maybe changing the story a little.

** Reviews on current CF certs and their trainings

** Letting us know when CF material is in the news

** A section where deals and sales are going on for CF hardware, software, or anything else related

** More PODCAST!

One of the things I've noticed in the industry over the years is how often you see something like a request for case studies, but no (or very few…but mostly no) offers of posting or providing case studies. Most often, the person asking to *see* case studies has a lot of reasons for not providing them.

Over on the Win4n6 Yahoo group, I posted a report that I wrote for an exam I did of one of Lance Mueller's practical examples. But as with other attempts, there's little if any effort on the part of others to post similar things. Corey Harrell has posted to his blog about how he goes about determining exploit artifacts, which is fantastic.

Very often, the same is true for some of the other things you've mentioned, such as podcasts. I'm taking part in the DFIROnline meetups that Mike Wilkinson (of Champlain College) started hosting, and he is planning on recording these, so they sort of act like podcasts (with video).

I think from a personal standpoint, I'd be more willing to post this sort of stuff myself if there were others willing to do the same.

If I was going to launch a computer forensics/ eDiscovery site and I wanted it to show integrity and professionalism, I'd choose a better user name than 'yuckthefankees'.

Besides Jonathan's excellent point, I think that we have enough sites out there…as the OP pointed out, there's ForensicFocus, for one.

The problem isn't, as I see it, a lack of sites, but rather one of content. ForensicFocus, like other sites, has a lot of excellent content, but the OP's original question is predicated on some content not being either available or lacking in some fashion (quality, volume, etc.).

I would suggest that before we start standing up new sites, we think hard about using the sites that we do have more and to a better degree. Want more podcasts? Get together with someone and start one…you don't even need your own domain to do it.

If you want more content, consider (a) generating it yourself, or (b) structuring your thoughts and asking someone for help.

@Jonathan,

You made my morning by posting that. In no way shape or form does my username damage my integrity, you might want to look up the definition of the word…but since I'm a nice guy..here you go.. adherence to moral and ethical principles; soundness of moral character; honesty.

After your post, I would definitely question your professionalism. You post a comment that has nothing to do with the topic, you definitely had a negative demeanor when posting that comment.

And my favorite point to make. Before I joined this site, I was told a lot of people will talk down to you or make you feel dumb for asking certain questions. I was given a couple screen names of the people not to interact with…and what do you know, you made the list! So what do you think that says about your integrity and professionalism? I'll help you out, it's not good.

@keydet89,

I'm not looking to make my own site but just something to get people thinking. I would like to contribute to the field and this site, but since I'm newer to the field..I wont be of much value to adding content and volume.

Just on the issue of the username, it certainly gave me pause for thought before approving the account and I even received a couple of PMs after your initial posts questioning the wisdom of doing so. Think what you like of Jonathan's comment (and I suspect the use of the word "integrity" in this context is indeed somewhat misplaced) but he's right in pointing out that it's the kind of thing which sticks out like a sore thumb in a profession known for being fairly conservative. At the end of the day, taking his comments on board (and requesting a username change - feel free to PM me) will almost certainly be in your best interests in the long term. None of that is a criticism, you're new to the field so probably don't have a feel for the social norms.

On the issue at hand, I fully agree with Harlan's comments. The issue isn't there aren't enough CF websites, it's that there isn't enough content for the ones we have.

I'm not sure why you say that…as I've pointed out in two very well received posts to my blog, being "new to the field" has absolutely nothing to do with anyone's ability to provide content, aside from being a self-imposed obstacle.

I think that simply given the fact that you had the foresight to ask your original question shows that you have something to contribute.

Why not start by writing up a case study?

I knew what the urban dictionary definition of it was before, but I still believed/believe that it has another meaning.

I just do not understand, on one end you are wanting to do something positive, and then as if to say don't come here to my new posts or site, you'd put up a questionable name. Lots of old timers around or mid range people who just want to do forensics and see your name as a double entendre which just isn't needed.

You have people telling you in a forum maybe change it, and others who don't want to speak out publicly emailing the mod privately.

Surely you don't want unneeded heat on you as you try to learn a new profession.
