There is also PhotoRec (free).
I think it is based on signature to carve, like a lot of other tool.

PhotoRec can recognise quite a lot of file signatures (more than 480 file extensions) and is part of Autopsy (now in version 4.0) which is free. You can add filetypes manually in Autopsy if you want.
