Im currently doing a module at uni that is briefly covering digital image (pictures) forensics. Are there any papers or sites that anyone can recommend reading?

I recently attended a conference where a product named "Adroit Photo Forensics" by Digital Assembly was presented. I don't have all the details of how it works, but it uses an algorithm designed by some professors in NY to locate and carve photos with some very good success. Back at our office it found more deleted images than EnCase did on the same drive.

You might find the information on their site helpful for what you are working on.

What do you mean by tampering? Messing with the EXIF data?

Do check with the founder of Digital Assembly Dr. Nassir Memon.

A good reference that may also assist you is a book titled "Photoshop CS3 for Forensics Professionals A Complete Digital Imaging Course for Investigators"

So what sort of tampering are you looking for, is it any tampering or one of the following?

1) EXIF tampering
2) Removal of watermarks?
3) Copy and pasting portions of another image or area.
4) Red Eye Removal?
5) Something else entirely?

One other question, do you have access to the original and do you want to know where the manipulation occurred?

One of the simplest way to see if a photo has been modified is by checking the EXIF software tag, some photo applications will add their stamp there. Of course, the EXIF may not be present, or a smart user will modify that data.

Adroit Photo Forensics next release will including grouping by EXIF software tag to identify manipulation in Photoshop, Gimp, Pixelmator etc. We will be doing something else more advanced as well, but we are not ready to talk about that yet D

If you google "detecting tampered images" you will get a ton of research papers. There is also a very cool site that gives you examples of image tampering from the 19th century onwards

I have seen a lot of work from this guy especially at Dartmouth. There are some interesting papers he has written.

Yes, in these areas. Im trying to find any future developments/possible areas of further research.

Thanks.

For detecting composed images, see some of the work Micah Kimo Johnson has been doing at MIT

Papers include
Exposing Digital Forgeries by Detecting Inconsistencies in Lighting
Exposing Digital Forgeries Through Chromatic Aberration
Detecting Photographic Composites of People
