We have had discussions in my place of work relating to imaging directly to the company server. Some are of the opinion that due to the span of drives in the RAID array (I haven't counted them but there are a few) sending small amounts of data to the server can cause issues.

Does anyone else image directly to a server with a large RAID array? If so do you ever have any problems doing so? I'm not convinced this causes problems as we've been imaging directly to a server for a good while previously.

Any personal experience on the matter would be helpful.

At a previous employer we imaged directly onto a server which had 3 raid arrays, one of which was just for imaging. It worked very well.

We work directly to a storage array containing nearly 100 disks. Imaging across a network to your storage will not cause problems as long as the architecture can handle the I/O.

Remember that databases or file and print servers generally handle lots of small writes and reads. Raids are generally more efficient with more disks, although there are 'sweet spots' dependant on your hardware/

Working to local disks just holds you back unless you only have one or two examiners.

We create TrueCrypt volumes for each of our cases on our SAN. You can wipe the volume ), encrypt the content and segregate the cases all in one shot.
