Hi all,

I was just wondering if anyone knows of any australian companies that have in-house forensic teams? I am specifically wondering about banks, government or financial institutions.

thanks

As you probably already know, having computer forensics specialists and the lab can be quite expensive, so only large enterprises can afford it. Australian banks do have security/forensic teams usually busy doing anti-phishing and malware analysis. Several big accounting and insolvency firms have low-level (basic) in-house forensic teams. None of them are properly trained for full blown forensic analysis and court presentations. This is usually done by specialised companies, which offer Forensic Services to others.

thanks for that. I was wondering more specifically if anyone knew the names of any companies with in-house forensic capabilities, as I am interested as to how they went about setting the team up.

I doubt that Banks would share such experiences. You may try Ferrier Hodgson or maybe BDO Kendals.

I think you'll find a lot of companies get others in to do Forensics in Australia.

What are you wanting to know about setting up a team, the Personnel side of things? Or eqipment/funding?

Actually I work for a large accounting firm and because we offer computer forensics as a service and have one of the largest, most experenced teams in Australia, by default we do it in-house as well.

You'll find most of the large accounting firms actually have quiet experenced people as most offer it as a service and apart from one other small company, were the first to do so in Australia.

If you haven't already, take a glance at Bill Nelson's book Guide to Computer Forensics and Investigations (3rd ed.) – it spends a chapter or so on the 'logistics' of a forensic team.

hmm im guessing mimpich is referring to purely in-house, rather than a consulting service that services in-house as well? i may be wrong.

but as others have mentioned - i believe the big banks and the like have teams/individuals with limited capacity. however they tend to bring in external companies for big/important matters.

As far as government goes, there are lots of computer forensic teams. State and Federal law enforcement, the tax office, Dept of Transport, CMC, Medicare (I think), Centrelink (I think), ACC, DSD - the list goes on.
