Hello,

This may not be directly linked to forensics but its probably a good a place to ask. Can anyone reccomend any internet filters so kids can use the internet safely? It would be best if its specific to user accounts on xp as not everyone who uses the computer is under 18.

I've tried some before but they just ended up been an pain redirecting everything or they had to be manual activated when changing user accounts.

Just one of the kids found a rather disturbing video earlier.

Thanks!

www.opendns.org

Very good dns redirecting service that allows you to modify your dns entry on your router to point to theirs. Using their online account (free) you can restrict categories of sites so no one can access them. Categories are voted on by users and moderated by the opendns team.

Open Source Firewall http//www.smoothwall.org/. Use an old PC and turn it into a dedicated firewall. Use the homebrew options available from their support forums for additional functionality, e.g. virus scanning, web filtering, monitoring, email spam filter etc etc.

CyberSitter - http//www.cybersitter.com/
~$40 one time fee.
They used to have a trial download - not sure if they do anymore.

You can specify which accounts need to be "babysat". Logs IMs and can be hidden from the taskbar after a user-defined amount of time so that it's not seen by the user. It will also allow you to set time-restrictions (as in no Internet access from 9am - 7pm M-F etc).

Disclosure I do not work for them - have recommended it to friends who have been happy using it.
