This applies mostly to LEO's As a Computer Forensics Examiner/Analysis, do you also do other law enforcement investigations, out side of computer forensics, such as an on call crimes investigation?
That result honestly surprised me. I expected 100% no response.
While I was a sworn office with our Computer Crime division that is all we did. The workload was far too heavy that to do any traditional police work in between the computer stuff and studying at University as well as the inhouse training etc would have been impossible.
Not to mention that the more contemporary police work you do the more your computer forensics work suffers IMO.
So those that answered yes I'm genuinely curious was this a decision based on light work load or were you not working dedicated computer forensics (maybe there was no dedicated computer forensics unit so you just worked on your own?).
Adam,
You need to consider the difference between Aussie coppers who are huge state level orgs vs US where there are tiny policing districts. I went from a 13k employee police force at QldPol and now live in a town with 14 fulltime cops, and that's a stand alone police department . Hence you get a lot of part time forensics guys whose main job is investigations.
Ah yes good point, I didn't consider that.
Well then taking that in to consideration I am no longer surprised )
Adam10541- I too am surprised at the results but it makes me feel better knowing that others are in somewhat the same predicament as I. I also concur, considering the caseload, schooling and training, who has time to handle other criminal investigations. However, it is often the case that a Sgt or Lt who are running the unit have next to no experience running a CFU and run it in a traditional investigative manor. 😯
