Great information, but pretty much like I said. It takes professionals like ourselves to guarantee the complete destruction of the information.

Unless you're a business with incompetent IT folks, using a free tool like this or this would be sufficient.

Using Eraser is good enough, especially if you use DOD level wiping. .

1 pass is sufficient. Anymore and it's just time consuming with no added benefit for the person doing the wiping.

What do you mean Rich2005? If its that complicated then maybe Ill just forget it! does the software not do the work for you? Im not a computer whizz. Do you think its enough to just format your hard drive when getting rid of your old computer

O.K. Jeff, here is part of the conversation and questions from the beginning. This person was not asking for information on how to totally wipe the drive.

Exactly. Any type of emails or instant messages, website information, files and more can potentially be located and the fragmented information can be reconstructed.
Our company does this type of Data Recovery and have for over 15 years. But, one of the other questions you were asked is if you are concerned about them being found or do you need them ? If you want them gone that can be done too.

So… our trained professionals do know what they are doing and the information we provided db101 was correct.
Jeff, you need to get your facts straight before you start shooting people.

Not shooting anyone. Simply pointing out the obsolescence of hiring a 'professional' to assure data wiping when it can be accomplished with free tools by an individual.

SDelete allows you to wipe all unallocated space, or the "invisible hard drive". If you want to be extra-safe, you can use Killdisk to wipe the drive. Neither process requires a professional to employ.

I know that Darik's Boot and Nuke is a very good tool for getting rid of data on any HDD. It is free and it is used by the DOD and other government agencies. It goes very deep onto the hdd but as many of you know if someone wants to get data on that HDD it can be done. Just my two cents worth. Darik Boot and Nuke as I said is free and it is a very small utility that can be put on a *gasp* floppy disk if anyone still uses them. HaHa.

Unfortunately all that formatting does is delete the file index (known as the FAT or MFT) and leaves all file and their content in tact. A competent forensic investigator could still retrieve a great deal of information from your computer. We've given you a few suggestions as to how you can do this, I recommend looking at which one is the most suitable and easiest to use.

Just as a side note, if you're just getting rid of it what you could do it take out the hard drive, tear off the cover, and smash the platters into pieces. Once you have done that, get some thermite or do this http//driveslag.eecue.com/

I personally guarantee that no one will be able to recover your chat conversations then )

(I'd love to do this)
