What do you mean Rich2005? If its that complicated then maybe Ill just forget it! does the software not do the work for you? Im not a computer whizz. Do you think its enough to just format your hard drive when getting rid of your old computer

Unfortunately all that formatting does is delete the file index (known as the FAT or MFT) and leaves all file and their content in tact. A competent forensic investigator could still retrieve a great deal of information from your computer. We've given you a few suggestions as to how you can do this, I recommend looking at which one is the most suitable and easiest to use.

Yes thanks but maybe I dont need to go to all that trouble. If formatting gets rid of the basics maybe thats the best. Thanks

If you are concerned about someone examining the drive, wipe it. If you are not concerned and just want to reuse the drive format it.

I think this topic has been completely overcomplicated and is now a mess.

If db101 has simply said he/she wanted to get rid of their drive at end-of-life, the topic would have been answered and closed off very quickly.

The way the question was posed was quite cagey IMO. I could not tell if the user had something to hide and was trying to find a way of wiping selective data. As the O.P. says, he's not an expert, so the terminology used is understandable.

Plenty of solutions have been offered to the O.P. and it's probably best left at that.

Sorry if I was unclear or 'cagey'! as you put it but I dont have anything to hide. I just wonder about my personal stuff being recovered. But I think I have enough info now.

I see that the myth of 1 simple 00 pass not being enough still goes strong. (
