Is there a way to determine the phone model that generated an ipd file from looking at the ipd file itself?

If you want to use the simplest method then open the IPD file in an editor and search for Research In Motion - there will be a number of occurrences but you should be able to find out the model, series and the software version being used.
If you have any products like XRY or Cellebrite Physical opening the IPD file will let you know what model it is.

The model number is stored in these files
on the BB 8900 - /Handheld Agent/174
on the BB 8100 - /Handheld Agent/24
on the BB 9780 - /Handheld Agent/946
This file also holds the BB IMEI and the Blackberry PIN
I will later get you the logic how we get to the exact file.
