Now, what is the problem?
Supposing that your friend is reliable, why don't you ask him/her to show you EXACTLY what he/she means and WHICH EXACT trick is it?
If - on the other hand - he/she is reporting that a friend of his/her cousin, the one who married young, not the other one, has a friend that once overheard her brother-in-law saying that he has a friend that says that he was told by a guy he met once at the pub that with a trick (not a forensic solution) he could find deleted calls on the iPhone …

I only have one question, why your friend would be "frightned" because there is a trick to see deleted calls on his/her iPhone without a forensic software?
Spoiler there is many ways to recover such data with free software or by jailbreaking the phone in question. Just do a quick google search but do not show the result to your friend he/she will be terrified.
