I've just extracted an iphone 3g with XACT and have found an audio recording of interest.
The filename suggests the date and time of the recording 20090625 155245.m4a
on viewing the phone via its user interface the same recording reports that it was recorded six hours later (i.e 2252 date & minutes the same)
On further look it appears that all audio recordings appear to have filenames that suggest 6 hours before the UI reported time
I'm sure this must be something to do with international timezones but the phone reports its GMT and the user tells me it also has never been different.
Can anyone explain the reasoning for this?

What is the timezone set to on the device?
Most of the iPhone time stamps are stored as UTC, which could explain why the time recorded is different to that shown on the device.
the Phone reports its GMT and "auto update" not completely sure was the update is, perhaps the time from the networks.
I understand that GMT = UTC so little difference should be seen?
Jason
Google is not your friend, but contains a slew of information…
"about 4,870,000 for iphone time zone problems".
The auto update is probably for daylight savings time updates on the handset. I think jhup may be onto something though.
The time difference between the recorded and the displayed timestamps is 7 hours. This is the difference between UTC and Pacific Daylight Time, which is the timezone that would be in effect in Cupertino at the time the recording was made.
Looks like the software is trying to translate from UTC to PDT rather than to British Summer Time which is the timezone that would be in effect in the UK at the relevant time.
What OS version is on the handset? I will do some experiments to try and confirm my theory later if you let me know.
Thanks for the help on this - really appreciated. Jason
The physical handset has had to be returned but from the examination notes
Its Apple iPhone 3G Revision 3.0 (7A341) Think the 3.0 is the operating system version
Model number MB496
Activation state = FactoryActivated
The device GMT Offset is reported as Europe/Dublin.
Baseband version 04.26.08
SIM was not inserted.
XACT reported that it was Jailbroken, but I'm not sure.
Xact wouldn't have given you a read if it wasn't Jailbroken - unless they've changed something major recently?
Could be Jail broken, The user said they was not aware of this being the case and has had it from new - but I'm not 100% sure of the users integrity.
This is my first experience with an Iphone. Do this think this may be significant to the data/IU difference.
Jason
If they say the iPhone was purchased new, from an authorized iPhone distributor, how would it be 'jailbroken'? It is possible, but highly improbable.
I think you may need to downgrade your percentage of the user's integrity.
I have had a look through my phones and I could only find a 2G iPhone running OS 3.0 Build 7A341.
The phone is set to London, so the current timezone is GMT.
I created a recording at 2033 today. The file is named 20100304 203357.m4a
I have tried trimming the audio recording down, yet the recording date is still displayed as 2033.
I will play around with the handset and set the device to the settings you have reported and try further.
