In a current investigation we see that an iphone contacts maps.google.com. The url that's been visited is like this

/maps/geo?=*********** (* = the mobile phone number of the iphone)&output=csv&key=CC55BB etc. (a very long string of numbers and letters)

There's not much more information to be found, also not with WireShark etc.

Can anybody explain to me what happens here ? Why is the iphone contacting maps.google.com and is more information (geo location etc.) available somewhere ?

Thanks !

There could be several reasons for that. Not many apps can run on the background but some can. Jailbroken iPhones have many more apps that do run this way. Is your iPhone jailbroken?

more info re geolocation can be found on iPhone developer's sites similar to this one

when you log on to google on the Iphone it gives you your location under the search box purpose i suppose so if u type in take-aways or taxis it only shows local companies, this could be a reason why it calls that URL

i have no clue just an idea
