I would only trust a keylogger that you compiled yourself.

Really? If you follow that path, would you only fly in a plane that you built yourself? Drive a car?

You've also not specified how you're going to recover the logs, and most importantly if you are acting lawfully.

I know azrael pretty well, and I'm sure he'd be acting with full knowledge of the law!

Think about who writes keyloggers. Generally, they are not nice people.

Following that logic we should not use encryption programs as most of the people that write those programs did not have the best backgrounds either.

pykeylogger, MyHook, KidLogger, BFK, etc. are all Open Source key loggers.

No one said that using software written by a hacker is not fool-hardy. It just seems you are lumping most all keyloggers into a category of being written by "bad guys".
