In an other thread we talked about image or preview, which made me wonder - What method do you use to long term store your digital evidence?
Currently, I have drives, appropriately labeled, with encrypted volumes on them. Each volume contains images, reference documents, etc.
I said before, I can get 1TB SATA drive for $100, but would rather spend much less.
Blu-Ray is still in its infancy, and 'only' holds, if I am correct 50GB.
I have a dislike of tapes, but is that an option?
Back to the original question - what method do you use to 'archive' cases?
Shat method do you use to long term store your digital evidence?
I would edit this if I was you.
1. Disk image held on seperate drive held in storage permanently
2. Backup copy of image, extracts and reports backed up to SANS
3. 3x Encrypted Backup copies of extracts and reports written to DVD
Currently use all 3 methods for each and every case other than mobile phones, where only items 2 & 3 are used.
A dual-layer Blue-Ray is 50gb, Holographic discs could be x20 this.
I read an article in the New Scientist earlier this year, I will try to dig it out but it quoted average lengths of storage for various mediums.
CD/DVD - (R) - (4 years)
CD/DVD (RW) - (4 years)
CD (Audio) - (10 years)
CD (Gold / Special Dye) - (100 years)
HDD (inc Flash) - (10 years)
It also listed some other mediums, ie. tapes, but can't recall exactly.

lol
Are you guy saying jhup doesn't even know how to spell/write?
Maybe, (although more likely it was a slip of a finger), but I do know my plural pronouns. lol
… Are you guy saying …
But - back to the topic -
So disk, be it an other drive or SANS, and DVD so far. Any other destination?
Tape anyone?
Greetings,
Pick your favorite media and periodically, say 80% through its life expectancy, migrate the contents to new media.

I would be interested by the New Scientist article or a link to it.
Thanks,
Nicolas.
I simply write out each bit of a drive in a notebook so I can recreate it should I need to come back to it in 10 years. lol
Now if you'll excuse me….10110011101000001101…..
