my coworker forgot to record an macbook air's serial number (yes, it's very stupid!) but successfully took an image of it.
Is there anyway for us to know mbp's serial number from any kind of plist ??
we don't have mbp and it's box, only we got is whole disk image
thanks in advance!
it's in there somewhere, looking at the system info on my mac I can see the serial number
just havent been able to find the plist that it's stored in
maybe do a keyword search for "serial number" across the drive and see what plists come up
also this is why its critical to take photos of the device prior to examination!
howd you go with finding it?
One method
1. Get another MacBook, preferably with the same OS
2. Note serial number
3. Search for serial number; make sure you include hidden/system files
4. If you find it, note the location! 😉
But you've tried this already, right?

I just did and couldn't really come up with anything. Will have to try do a bit more research when I get a chance.
Only got 3 hits for my serial across the drive and that was in xcodes iPhone simulator as a wifi address.
I'm sure it's there somewhere I just haven't found it yet.

Not necessarily. Unlike a PC, in which software and hardware is made by two different companies, Macs are made by one company. It is possible, maybe even probable, that the hardware serial number is stored in the firmware, and referenced whenever needed by the software.
What is the format of the serial number - do you have an example?
I had a friend who had Mac Air stolen and at the time I tried to find SN from backup and could not. I was told that SN is encoded in hardware only. He ended up contacting Apple or getting it from iCloud (I can't recall which, but he did obtain for police report, etc)
I found this thread from an Apple support forum. https://
Seems you will need the actual computer to get the serial number. I briefly looked at the usual suspects in /Library/Preferences and was not able to find my own serial number from a MBP late 2011. So, I think the post maybe correct. The serial number is on the hardware.

The older ones are 11 digits alpha numeric. The new ones are 12.
Don't think it can help, but plenty of examples are online.
Since seeing this, I added mine to Apple support profile because it appears that if stolen, SN goes with it even if you have a backup.
