Hi,
OK, so this is a question I have been asking around the office, but we can't quite figure out ourselves, so said I would ask on here where people can get their nerd on!
So, basically, for those that may or may not be aware, Guidance have finally got their Mac / Linux course ready to go and since I still have some months left on my passport, said I would sign up… however, there is a prerequisite that people attending the course must bring their own Intel based MacBook… unfortunately we only have an old G4 PowerBook in the office, and nobody else in here has their own personal Intel based one. So… I was thinking, what if I put OSX on my own Dell XPS machine.
If I formatted the drive, put HFS and full (legal!) version of OSX on it, then, "technically" would it not be a full Intel based install of OSX?
I have an M1330 XPS and I did some hackintosh research and apparently it installs near perfect on it, except for some issues with the WiFi drivers (which may or may not be fixed, since it was an old forum post)
Whats peoples thoughts on this? Would it pass for a mac machine (forensically) or would there be many a pitfall. I don't know why the course isn't just working on images???
Thanks.
You'll probably miss out on things like Target disk mode, but you could always look over someone's shoulder for parts that are hardware specific. I can't imagine there would be much you'd miss. Call the training department and have them ask the trainer how much you won't be able to do.
Yeah, I emailed the training department, but I basically got the spiel from the website, but the little caveat at the end of the email said its not even essential to have a laptop with you, its just for a few hands on practicals, but like you say, I could get through most with the Hackintosh or simply pair up with somebody!
I think I will chance it with the PC… Plus the nerd in me has always wanted to give this a go )
Has anyone tried running such methods as Zdziarski's via Mac OSx installed on VMworkstation?
You will violating the Apple license as it states that the OS can only be installed on Apple branded hardware.

See this is where I have a problem with all this crap and I start to get on my high horse!
If I'm using a legally purchased / licensed OS from Apple and a laptop that I paid nearly £1000 for new with MY own hard earned cash, then I have the right to do what I want to that laptop and CD. If I want to set fire to the two, thus burning any licensed hardware / code, then I'm in my right to and therefore if I wish to commit the mortal sin of putting an Apple OS on an (Intel) based laptop that doesn't have a picture of a half eaten apple on the front of it then I will!
I understand the plight of the pirating world (like the latest uproar from Sony and GeoHot), but take the pirating of software / games out of it and what we do with our hardware is up to us!
(By the way Beetle, I'm not getting at you and your comment, this isn't an attack on you ) ) just the man! lol
i think for a course it would be fine, prepare and test it b4 you go, WiFi drivers should be sort-able.
Good point Beetle.
Wouldn't almost everything be different? What if they are using drivers that are expecting certain hardware and are thus making specific calls to that hardware? Have you dumpped your console to see if you are experiencing any driver issues? I mean I would guess that if the course is calling for something as specific as an Intel Based Mac, they will be looking for specific set of hardware. Otherwise your old school PPC based Mac would do the job just fine. Also as Beetle pointed out; you've pretty much slapped Apple's EULA in the face by putting their beloved software on a PC (a Dell no less). I run Windows, Linux and Mac OS X almost everyday, so I'm not too, too biased. And I have fractured the occational cyber law here and there, but I wouldn't walk into a FORENSICS seminar with physical proof you have violated Apple's EULA…
Just sayin,

It might stray on the wrong side of the law, but these are trying times we live in and I'm pretty sure a request for a £1000 MacBook would fall on deaf ears to be honest!
hmorgan - I've seen that somewhere before, not tried it, it will be my Plan B if I can't get OS X installed on the laptop! Having some troubles with it on reboot | grrr…
