Hi, I was wondering if it is possible to track messages sent on myspace and facebook.com by taking a mold of the computer recieving the messages? I have someone who says he can pinpoint the exact origin just by doing this? Thanks!

I suspect the phrase was a "forensic image." At most a sending IP address might be possible but under the best of conditions that will narrow down to a geographical area. Save your money for other things.

yeah maybe thats what he meant…he just said a mold though…so you think he could only find a geographical location like in a certain radius of the area? If these messages are a couple weeks old and the person sending them have deleted their profiles will this even be possible?

IF the IP addresses of the sender were available it would trace back to the senders ISP. That is IF it's available and I haven't used MySpace or FaceBook enough to know that they are forwarded. But once you have the senders ISP, the problem is narrowning it down. There are utilities of varying quality that will try to get a geographical area but that can be iffy. If the ISP is a large one such as a telecommunications company or cable company the area is potentially much larger than if it's a small city based ISP.

The bottom line becomes what can you do with the information? Unless a crime is involved or significant civil suit, it becomes a so what? The ISP won't release the person associated with the IP address without a subpoena.

Hope that helps.

The ISP I believe is Comcast so it would probably be huge its in a metro area as well…exactly a crime is not being involved so I dont believe anyone will release the information, I think my mom is going overboard…the computer examiner told her he could pinpoint the exact location they were coming from but I didnt believe him…does a subpoena cost money?

It takes a court action from either a criminal or civil action. Lawyers, court fees, all that. That aside, Comcast IPs would be a whole metro area. Is the conclusion that it's from a Comcast IP because of prior knowledge about the party involved?

If by pinpoint one means a general are the it's possible. If it's a neighborhood or house, that takes the ISP.

The only thing going on is someone is communicating with my sister who we believe isnt really the person in the pictures and my mom wants to know who it is…Yeah thats the general consensus…its coming from the Atlanta area, the examiner said he could pinpoint the exact person involved…i find that hard to believe and that would take time after going to court to get a subpoena right?

Yep, that'd be my view.
