We were viewing footage from a police video cam and it started 3-4
seconds earlier than what we are able to view now. We watched the
video 7-8 times. Then all of a sudden, the video start point started
later. We are no longer able to retireve the 3 seconds earlier on the
.avd footage. We have tried. There is missing footage that is
inperitive to our case. How to do we find that footage? We have
tried to open the file in a different media viewers and have been
unsuccessful.

How can we view the .avd video in another viewer? How can we retireve
the 3-4 seconds of fottage at the beginning of the video. The viewer
both on the CVC and on the computer won't let us retireve it - but it
is there.

What happened between first viewing and second viewing? Can you go back to the original file?

I am not aware of the .AVD video format - is it called anything else?

There are two types of video I have seen. MPEG, and .MTS files are self contained, and even a small sections will display in a viewer.

Other files, such as AVI and 3GP require all header, data and trailer sections (eg ftyp -mdat-moov) to be complete before most viewers will display them. Thus a fragment of this type of file can be very difficult to view.

I would try and establish what type of file it is. Does it have a signature that can be used for carving. Is it a format that metadata will need to be reconstructed to view.

Has the size of the file changed since you got it?
Do the date / time stamps on the file indicate if the file has been updated since you received it?
Do you have a MD5 hash for the file when you got it?
Did you see the same behavior on a different computer?

Hi

the size of the file is 469mg. The file has not been updated since we received it. It appears the same on each computer. I am not sure what MD5 hash means? The file came over with Autoplay.exe.

It is so strange because the first 3 seconds of the video had the important details of the case. Nothing has changed - the video just doesn't start from where it originally did. However, you can hit the back button, several times, on the Autoplay viewer and it does retrieve about 1 second of the video but ut stops. You can tell that there is more data as the picture on the video shows 7k more.

Help

I don't think .AVD is a common video format.

Do you know what system / hardware / software generated this file?

A quick search on Google turn up this "AVD Video Processor"
http//www.avlandesign.com/vp.htm

And this (probably more relevant) Q & A.
http//superuser.com/questions/220156/have-avd-vdx-files-from-a-video-security-system-need-a-way-to-play-them-back

This would seem to imply the video came from hardware sold by the company "BlackBox" & that they have a player available for download.
