It In my opinion, if you are learning, it would behoove you to examine the raw data yourself, and attempt to reconstruct the information structure manually.

Software tools are excellent to facilitate and accelerate the process of extraction, but without understanding what the tool does, you are gaining little real knowledge.

Indeed - button forensics is easy, knowing what happens behind the scenes is essential and not for the faint of heart -) There is nothing like going over the physical dump of a phone to brighten up your day 😉

Sure, I'll help - I suggest you familiarise yourself with Part 8 of the UEL Manual of General Regulations.

BTW who's your course leader over there, is it still Hamid Jahankhani?

I think youll find that getting somebody to do it for you is a form of plagiarism…if you submit work done by somebody else as your own then you could get kicked off your course so think carefully about the level of involvement you want other people to come and help on.

I am sure if you outline what you need to do then everyone here will be happy to offer advice! )

Sometimes I wish sites had a 'like' feature for posts.

I had to write a program for my dissertation that extracted text messages and contacts from a Nokia 6310, exploiting the Bluetooth security failures… I knew nothing about JavaME or the Bluetooth protocol! But with the help of books, forums and El Goog I managed it and it was quite spiffing if I say so myself! You will learn more if you research it and understand it. Because you WILL get quizzed on it when you have to present it infront of your tutors!

Best of luck with it!

mandeep, here are links to three articles below. Read them. Then research

- The methodology for recovering deleted data
- The accuracy in recovering deleted data
- The pros/cons for interpretation of deleted data

Some observations for points you may wish to research?

a) how do you prove a recovered deleted text message was actually read if the important data in the header file is removed at the time the text is originally deleted?

b) how do you corroborate the recovered data displayed in your browser/program window is displaying the recovered data in the same way it would have been displayed when it was user accessible on the handset?
