Anyone interseted in forensic mobile tools, see forensic.mobiledit.com, this is a really advanced software for mobile data investigation used by police depts and law agencies worldwide.

Andy, Jonathan - a word of warning regarding so called mobile phone 'forensic' companies. I've recently re-examined a compact flash card used in a mobile phone that was outsourced originally. They did not use any write protection during their examination and subsequently altered ALL the timestamps. They did not recover deleted files, and the final 'forensic' report was not worth the paper it was written on, and charged an awful lot of money for this service. They might be good at cell site analysis but performing a 'forensic' examination of other media was flawed to say the least. I'll save them embarrasment by not mentioning the company name.

In the absence of hardware write blocking tools, a simple registry 'hack' might have possibly helped prevent the attributes being altered.

Here is a small application I've written to set a software write block (only works with Windows XP with service pack2). It exploits the fairly well known registry settings only available with service pack 2.
