well, that is perfectly "normal".
0x0000007b is "inaccessible boot device" which actually means in plain words "you have the wrong driver for mass storage devices.
If the original XP was an old machine using ATA/IDE, then you will have more luck using Qemu, which uses a IDE/ATA compatible "virtual" disk controller.
Both VMWare and Virtualbox (for whatever reasons) virtualize a given make/model of disk controller, so you need to install to the (offline) image the proper driver.
Virtualbox (it may depend on exact version) has teh possibility to attach the disk as IDE (but still you need to set the driver to IDE).
The generic manual procedure (change a mass storage driver of an offline image) is described here

Please note how the links to 911cd.net are now invalid (board was shutdown) and something can be found only through the Wayback Machine.
Nowadays you should probably rather look for "P2V" tools, check here for VMWare (though I have no idea if it is Windows XP compatible)

maybe you will need an older version than the current one (you will need some creative googling for this).

In details, my first step was to create a vmdk file with liveview 0.7b from my raw image.
Next, i create vm machine with VMWare.
Finally, i converted this virtual machine using VMware vCenter Converter
