In your opinion, what is the best tool out there to crack MS office passwords? We are preparing a case at work and would like to know the best tools to brute force an office password.

If anyone can recommend an open source or free tool, that would be great. I would rather use a free app and pay nothing, but buying a really good application is okay too. As always, any insights and opinions are appreciated.

I read about a year ago in an introductory forensics book that Cain & Abel was good for cracking office passwords, however i never tested it and have never had to crack any in a case. So heres a link

http//www.oxid.it/cain.html

if you use this, could you tell me what you thought of it?

Thanks

Greetings,

If you're going to do this at all regularly, I'd suggest buying PRTK from Access Data. It doesn't cost that much….

If you're going to be doing this regularly on files with tough passwords to crack, you'll want to consider using Access Data's DNA, or one of the special purpose hardware password cracking accelerators.

If you are going to be working with Office password recovery, AccessData Rainbow Tables or the Portable Tables subset will make quick work of opening encrypted files.

Thank you for the responses. I used PRTK and that worked great. They have a pretty powerful dictionary attack. I haven't tried Cain and Abel, but will experiment with it. Thanks again.
