I just released a new carver, I recieved several requests to add the capability of putting your own headers and footers into the application, my New carver has that capability. See screenshots below, Let me know how you like the interface as I had some spare time and thought I would have fun with some 3D software. Probly too much eyecandy but the program is very strong when it comes to carving.
The program Currently Uses Scalpel to Carve the files which is created by (Richard G Golden III) based on thier Headers and Footers, I plan on Developing this Program more to incorporate my md5 database to remove benign files as they are carved. Aswell as to create my own Carving engine to not use scalpel anymore.
My program is Currently on my site and Availible for purchase, However the Demo is Severly Limited to prevent further attacks on my programs.
My website is
Please let me know what you think of this Program. My Next release will be the Live Analysis Application after it is throughly beta tested.
I've just two questions
From the tools website
* This program will need Administrative Rights if run on Vista
Why would a tool that does carving from an image file need admin rights ?
No offense intended, but why should somebody buy a gui for a free tool instead of using the tool directly instead ? What are the advantages of that gui ?
The GUI needs toning down! I wouldn't want to have to look at that on a regular basis I'm afraid.
And $65 is a lot for front end which is not not strictly necessary. Why not make it cost-free to the end user as is Scalpel? It would drive a lot more traffic to your site and in the long term boost your/your company's profile.
I have to agree. Paying that much for a frontend that basically just sends command lines to scalpel is a bit ridiculous.

I am changing the price back to $25, I used a template from my upcoming live analysis program to make the page(mistake on my part). The reason I cannot digitally send the full version is that people have been Hacking them then reposting them online for free,(which as a programmer doing these progects then seeing your work redistributed in such a manor is very disturbing) If you check my site the price has already been lowered.
As for the interface that is why i attached a poll to this post to see if the majority of people like it or would like it toned down a bit, ie maybe keep the blue but get rid of the flashy silver badge and the header, and make the buttons more normal.

Basically the program needs permission to output the files, I usually recommend having a Separate folder branch off the C\ this gives the program permission to create folders at that level because a Feature known as User Account Control tends to deny that privilege.
As for Command Line vs, GUI The command line is great thats why I chose it, I learned carving on that program and Richard G Golden III is my idol when it comes to carving, but to type
scalpel -c config.txt -if=image.dd of=C\test
then
md5sum()
can be quite annoying especially since MD5sum does NOT work on Vista.(my program hashes the files for you in the md5sum format)
also my program creates the config file based on a check box selection and the custom headers and footers you enter into the database.
I do agree, and thats why i removed the price to 25 which is what it has always been, My program also works on VISTA, which you can see from the screenshots and md5sum (a common md5 hashing utility ) is 16bit which means that it cannot run on vista., My program provides a GUI that also links to a database of headers and footers that you can add your own, that alone will save you a lot of time searching through your computer for your custom configuration files for scalpel then un "#" the files you want..
Keep up the posts I want as much feed back as I can get, I am lowering the price back as your reading this page. I am not a big company just one programmer working to create useful tools that will aid law enforcement in investigations. I understand that Federal Funding is difficult to get approved and the cost to start labs is quite high, thus with the exception of my live analysis application(comes with External HD) all my programs will be under $30 for the Unlimited Station License for that User…
Let me know if there are further questions.

I was thinking just yesterday about developing a wrapper for Scalpel and low and behold someone has already done it. Good work.
Altho, that being said, I dont see any reason to pay for this. As has already been suggested giving away tools and utilities for free is not a bad plan of attack to raise your profile.

Its not exactly a wrapper, It uses scalpel as the carving engine yes, but the headers and footers are from the research I have done. Scalpel does not come with that many headers and footers. (I wish it did because my work would be so much easier) I'm Not out to make much of a profit, just to help pay for the resources to host my site, and to get some funding to keep creating these tools with new features. If I was out to make a profit my tools and interfaces would be much more. I don't feel 25 is unreasonable for a File Carver. Yes Scalpel is free by nature I even link to it on my site so that those who want the interface and the added features can purchase my program, or those who want the free version can download it from its site.

Oh yes absolutely, I can see that you are extending the functionality of scalpel. Well done for that. (alot more image types and custom headers is a nice touch also) I just meant I was thinking of making a wrapper myself.
I can see this being useful to people.
Must admit I have 1 pet hate and that is software that looks too much. Just use the default no bloody badges, images, etc just load, browse, start stop, and tick boxes for variations.
LIKE IMAGER you did that good
mitch

Well im glad you like the features of my program, as for the looks I will decide on that later, Which is why I put a poll on this post for people to vote if they like it or hate it…. But what about the features Do you like the ability to put your own Headers and footers in and add them as a click interface?
