Hello,
I am currently investigating a Navman N40i and have encountered some problems and anomalies with the parsing of times and dates by certain software.

Firstly I attempted using Forensic Navigation’s “Navman Examiner” inputting the “files of interest” Recent.dat and FavVer4.dat (as indicated by their website). However this model does not appear to have these files.

Should I be concerned that these files are not there and are there others that replace them on this particular model?

I then inputted the log files via a software called “Navman2GE” which parses the log files, associates a time and date with them and outputs the information to Google earth. There appears to be anomalies with the interpretation of the time and date information as the times jump from one day to the next without indicating which date the new day is. Furthermore the date associated with the information appears to be the latest date recorded rather than the start date of the recorded data.

Can anyone give some assistance in deciphering the log files to confirm or deny that the dates recorded are correct. My interpretation of the data (redacted for anonymity) is as follows

$GPGGA,122104.000, .*,N, *.*,W,1,09,1.0,89.3,M,47.1,M,,0000*77
$GPGSA,A,3,07,06,12,01,02,14,30,05,04,,,,1.6,1.0,1.2*31
$GPRMC,122104.000,A,*.*,N,00.*,W,4.08,211.77,260907,,*14

The *** portions of data contain the longitude and latitude.
The “122104” information is the time.
The “260907” information is the date.

Can anyone offer further clarification of the rest of the data and whether this interpretation is accurate?

If anyone has experience of this particular problem, that would be very much appreciated.

One last question – is it right to assume that the dates & times created on the device are dictated by the device rather than anything to do with the satellite?

Thanks
–Sheona
