The underlying point to all this is that in this field you can not take the stand or put in your findings, "Bobby McForensicator said so, (unless your name is Bobby McForensicator then please PM me because I need to know the guy with the best name ever.)

The entire groundwork for the field is you HAVE to be able to validate and justify your results. Maybe the snarky LMGTFY.com answers seem a bit biting, but it is to slap people to the reality that there is no such thing as "the best" answers but answers you derive that best support your opinion. If you don't learn that early on you get complacent from the start and you will hit walls later in your career.

I have to agree with isth and 7lowe here (and I think this is something we covered a little while ago too), there probably is no better response than no response if for some reason you're ticked off that the OP may not have looked elsewhere first. Why this should be the default assumption and why this should cause so much irritation in certain quarters continues to mystify me.

If I can be forgiven for speaking frankly, I think that all these rather snide remarks about "let me Google that for you" or whatever sound terribly condescending and I suspect serve only to stifle useful discussion and debate. I hope it goes without saying that that's not an outcome I welcome.

PS I'm not deaf to some of the concerns being raised here, just lazy in following up on some of the actions I promised when they were last discussed. I've now updated the welcome email and added a sticky with what I hope are useful guidelines for new members.

As a matter of fact I did look around on Google and I found many magazines, some that I listed. However, I was hoping to receive some good feedback by those in the industry who have read some and have some opinions on them. Yes I did some research, but no I didn't read EVERY journal to try and answer my question. I agree with some of those who wrote on here that you should search for yourself first. But don't just assume that the person didn't. I love this forum, but I have seen way to many people blast others for information they might not have, but perceive from a few lines of text. Please don't do that. You come off as arrogant.

All people can go on is what is posted.
Your post was
"Hello,

I am looking for a list of computer forensic publications (physical magazines/ journals), for example Digital Forensic Magazine and DFRWS.
Thanks,"

Nowhere in that post is this statement you just made
"I was hoping to receive some good feedback by those in the industry who have read some and have some opinions on them."

Had the post said I am looking for some feedback by those in the industry then this thread would not be 2 pages, but it said I am looking for a list of computer forensic publications.

I get faulted for a lot of things, this cannot be one of them.

I understand the frustration of the more experienced members here, but I do think no answer at all would be better. The way things are going the answer to where have you looked could soon be "I searched the forums and read dozens of threads where the question was asked, but was never answered as the discussion turned to whether it's more spoon feed someone an answer or make them look for it themselves."

I do think it's a good idea for people to search for the answers on their own, but I think this tactic does more harm than good by polluting the search results and making it harder for those that are searching on their own.

Hope I'm not alienating myself by disagreeing with the more senior members, but just wanted to add my $.02.

You are not alienating anyone. You are just voicing your opinion.

How do you possibly know? 😯

wink

Just for the sake of it, I find 7lowe did alienate himself (not by disagreeing with any other member (senior or junior) but because he missed the point about "Internet Pollution".

Say a less experienced or new member posts what I call otiose questions, i.e. anything that can be easily found, or that lacks ANY meaningful detail, or that simply makes no sense.

If noone replies him the effect is normally one or more of the following

  • the new member goes away and never return
  • the new member posts the same stoopid, senseless or otiose question on ANOTHER board (or on Yahoo Answers roll )
  • the new member thinks "Well, that's life" and next time he/she has another problem submits it somewhere in the same way (lacking info, badly or equivocally worded, etc.)

The effect in the short/medium term is Internet Pollution, i.e. next time someone, actually good-willing, expert and what not, starts searching about the problem at hand, he/she will find a zillion of unfinalized references, consisting of just the "wrong" questions (but using the "right" terms used in the search) with NO answer.

Since I believe that most people are NOT "lazy", "stupid" or worse, I find that the "duty" of a "more expert" member is

  • to point out the foolishness of the actual original question
  • explain HOW a proper question/post should be made
  • help anyway the OP, giving - whenever possible - some answers

The effect in the short/medium term are

  • a few more people (the OP's) will learn how to ask properly questions
  • a few more newbies finding the post through a search will have an occasion to learn the same
  • a few other newbies and as well some "experts" will actually find some useful info about the topic/matter they were searching for

Fairly good point.
