Hello all,

I am working on a case, and was shocked to find the Prefetch folder itself missing, and i have the following details of the OS

v5.2 Build 3790_sp2_qfe_090120-1510

XP x64 bit with 6Gb DDR3 ram

did anyone come across such a strange thing,

as far as i know it shd be a part of XP's demand paging and .PF files should exist.

Please enlighten me.

Regards.

XP doesnt prefetch.

Page files are not prefetch files.

Maybe the answer to the missing files lies in this reference

http//www.edbott.com/weblog/2005/06/one-more-time-do-not-clean-out-your-prefetch-folder/

Perhaps the files/folder have been deleted to mistakenly improve performance?

As the reference points out, and my own system confirms, XP 64bit does use prefetch. However prefetch is not what the name might suggest, it isn't a preloading of a program.

Application Prefetching can be disabled via the Registry, or the contents of the C\Windows\Prefetch directory may have been deleted.

Have you done any Registry analysis to determine if application prefetching was disabled?

Have you looked in user Recycle Bin folders?

Have you checked for indications that the prefetch files were deleted (ie, check the MFT for entries for prefetch files that were marked as not in use)?

Have you checked unallocated space for indications of Prefetch files?

> XP doesnt prefetch.

Yes, it does…by default, out of the box, XP is configured to perform both boot and application prefetching.

> Page files are not prefetch files.

The OP wasn't suggesting that that is the case; what they were referring to is how XP performs prefetching (ie, based on page faults from on-demand paging).
