Beside the easy XML file there is generaly tons of deleted data that can be extracted.

Cellebrite UFED extracts deleted Data (GPS Fixes and locations) both from TomTom and Garmin GPS devices

I have put some videos on the company web site specific for Garmins. They may be of some assistance to you.

Thats a very good blog. I have used it a few times for Sony and Navman devices.

I have always found that using a specific tool designed for the device you are looking at, if available, is much better than a generic one…TomTology is a fantastic tool I use every time.

There are many tools you can use to manipulate the data you have acquired…GPSBabel can convert to many different data types including KML; allowing launch in Google Earth. It can also convert NMEA data to a CSV file ready for mapping.

Analysing mobile phones on a regular basis, I use XRY for images of Garmin devices…

Xry can not do the archived .gpx files on the garmins, I find its best to examine Garmins using Google Earth, and Garmin's own Trip and way point manager. You can also create time line for those Garmins that store the route as you can edit copies of the gpx for just the requiered sections of the route then pass it back to Google earth and take snapshots, Also way point allows you export as a .csv then I create hyperlinks to google maps the requied locations.

I know XRY cannot decode archived gpx files, I obtain them using a script. I do however use XRY to decode the live file from the device.
