Is any place (except of the sticker of course) where the serial number of notebook can be found? Any BIOS, Windows registry, etc?
I mean in case of the lack of the sticker is any way to read the serial number?
Thanx guys )
ummmm…yes, no, maybe because it all depends on the manufacture.
Apple, Dell, HP, Toshiba - just off the top of my head from certain makes models can have it in the places you have described.
In fact a typical computer has multiple unique serial numbers in it.
- Each stick of RAM has one
- Each hard drive has one
- Each network card has one
- Each USB device has one
- Many laptops battery packs have one
- Some Intel CPUs have a serial number (often disabled however)
Some examples from my machine,
Hard Drive
Serial Number S17AJDWQ305393
Model Number SAMSUNG HD322HJ
Firmware Revision 1AC01109
RAM
Jedec Manufacture Name Apacer Technology
SPD Revision 1.2
Manufactured Week 33 of Year 2008
Module Part # 78.A1GA0.9K4
Module Revision 0x0
Module Serial # 0x2008332
But I think it is kind of rare that a PC has a serial number in the registry that matches any serial number on the case of the machine. Even in BIOS I think this is uncommon. What happens if people flash their BIOS?
On my new factory loaded Toshiba I have the serial number in the registry under HKLM\Software\Toshiba\TAISHOP
Name=SR, Type=REG_SZ, Data = the serial of the computer.
So it really does depend on several factors. The BIOS on many brand name machines will have the serial (Dells for example) and survives flashing (if from Dell support).
I would have thought the BIOS would have had this information?
The Serial Number 'may' be available in the registry but as has already been pointed out, it is dependant on the OEM.
There is a standard for BIOS which you can find

Hope this helps

Sometimes can be found in the battery compartment after removal of the battery. But you've already looked there I guess? wink
Thanx a lot guys for above suggestions. I need to check things out now )
