No doubt most of you have already seen the following announcement

Forensic Focus is pleased to support The National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC), a charity which will be familiar to many UK members, especially those involved with child protection issues. The NSPCC's annual HACK (Hike Against Cruelty to Kids) is now in its fifth year and has so far raised over £250,000. After four successful years in the north this summer there are five 25 mile HACKS taking place in some of the most stunning locations across the UK Yorkshire 5 September, Northern Ireland 5 September, Wales 12 September and Devon 27 September. And just in case you need any further motivation, there's a Forensic Focus T-Shirt for everyone who completes the hike - what more could you ask for?

There are also further details here.

It has been suggested that we have a sticky thread where those who are interested in participating in one of this year's HACKs can discuss things and perhaps arrange to meet up, share costs etc. This is a great opportunity to both do something worthwhile and network with other colleagues within the industry - I hope it will prove popular and become something we can support each year.

So, here's the sticky thread…please use it!!

Hi, I'd like to be the first to post in this with a request for any support. NSPCC have been my choosen charity for a while now and I liked the idea of the HACK event, I was very surprised when Forensic Focus wrote thier feature on it.

I am currently working for a year in between my university degree, BSc(Hons) Forensic Computing, at a forensic company in London.

It appears, unfortunately, that none of the HACK events are actually anywhere near London. I was looking at possibilities of travel and accomodation near a HACK venue when I saw the forensic focus feature.

My request, if anybody is really interested in this event, is if they could help me out in someway so I could be able to participate, be this transport to the HACK from the train station, a place to stay, anything that could be offered for any of the events, I'm not at all picky on which one. I would just like to attend and raise money for the NSPCC.

The other aspect of this would be a fantastic chance for me to meet other people in the forensic computing field. I am very enthusiastic about what I am getting in to and would greatly appreciate spending time with anybody already within the field.

If anybody is feeling especially giving I would love to hear from you. It could be a great chance to raise some money for a good charity and also have an enjoyable day out!!

Many Thanks

Thanks for posting, I hope someone will be able to help you out - if we can get at least one person on to a HACK this year it'll be worth it.

However, I freely admit 25 miles is something of a challenge. For those like me who can barely waddle to the fridge and back there's now a new way to show your support by donating online

http//www.justgiving.com/ForensicFocus-NSPCC/

You'll notice the above page sports the rather grand title of "2009 Forensic Focus Appeal". I'd like to make support for a particular charity a regular thing with a new one selected at the start of each year and then encourage anyone who finds Forensic Focus a useful resource to consider making a small donation.

I'll be asking for suggestions for next year's charity towards the end of this year so get your thinking caps on!

Cheers,

Jamie
