Sorry if this topic has already been discussed, I have had a browse around the forum and nothing stood out.

I am preparing to begin my dissertation in September and had hoped to use some of commercial tools available. However, due to issues here and there, none have been very forthcoming, with limit lab time available and the lack of funds to purchase a professional suite such as Encase Forensic for example.

This led me to think what peoples personal arsenal of freeware/open source Digital Forensic tools would be if commercial packages didn't exist, from PC and Laptop acquisitions to Mobile and Sat Nav acquisitions and analysis cases.

Naturally, if I do use anything discussed in this thread in my dissertation, all work will be cited. However, this is mainly to see if it worth perusing my topic for my dissertation without the full support of a commercial tool or if I should find an alternative subject.

I believe Jonathan Krause maintains a list of open source/freeware tools which you may find useful.

Brian Carrier maintains http//www.opensourceforensics.org, please contribute to this project.

You may also want to consider purchasing the book "Digital Forensics with Open Source Tools"
ISBN-10 1597495867
ISBN-13 978-159749586
http//www.amazon.co.uk/Digital-Forensics-Open-Source-Tools/dp/1597495867/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1308413329&sr=8-1

Amazing what can be achieved using Free and Open Source tools. As they are Open Source it allows insight into how answers may be derived. Which is an extremely healthy attribute to any Scientific discipline.

Thanks to authors of this book for their contributions, Cory Althiede, Harlan Carvey and of course to all those that contribute to free and Open Source software -)
