Paraben offers a wide variety of software as well as package bundles. How does the community here rate their products? How do they compare with the competition on functionality and price? Anyone have any experience with their training?

Thanks in advance.

I attended their cell forensics class, and wasn't really that impressed. It was more of a "tab tour" of what their product did than a true forensics class. I understand that cell phones don't store data by any standard, so I guess it's not like performing forensics on a hard drive, but I would have liked to have a little more background included in the class.

That being said, the software functions fine, and does what it advertises.

Thanks for the valuable insight into their training. As with any growing industry there are a lot of tools out there and it's hard to decide which are worth investing in and which aren't. From reading the posts here it looks like encase is the tool of choice along with WinHex. The folks at Paraben were very helpful on the phone and seem to offer a nice package of products.

Do you know anything about the products from DIBS?
Thanks

I am not sure that it is an open and shut case in favour of EnCase, certainly they have achieved a high penetration with LE clients and certainly they would have you believe that it is the natural tool of choice. However, AccessData's FTK, particularly the Ultimate Tool Kit version, is extremely powerful and does many thing that EnCase does not. One must also not forget that Linux and its toolkits, both open and closed source, have a large following, indeed EnCase is a re-write of one of these.

When comparing Paraben's training to that of EnCase it must be remembered that there is a huge difference in functionality. To Use EnCase effectively far more knowledge is required than to use Paraben's cell phone products. In the later case a quick test drive around the functions and a bit of practice together with one's background knowledge of data forensics may well be sufficient but this would never be possible with EnCase.

Paraben just came out with Cell Seizure 3.0. I have used Paraben’s cell software for about a year now and I have used version 3 for about a month. They have made many improvements mainly LG support, GUI and fixed registration and compatibility issues with duel higher end computers. I would recommend Paraben.

Thats not actually true.

Encase came first, the Linux forensic software you refer to was created by the same person who created Encase and came second. The link is the creator…

I've been using Mobiledit!Forensic with success - have been able to recover deleted SMS messages from SIM cards with the latest version and a SIM card reader, so have been quite impressed by that.

Wardy,

1) Expert Witness for Macintosh

2) Then ported to Windows, Expert Witness for Windows

At this point both gentlemen still friends and partners.

Uh oh, bad mojo, a split occurs, and the great divide is formed.

3) Expert Witness for Windows (just a port of EW for Mac) is changed to "EnCase" and code is the same, eventually maturing over time.

4) SMART for Linux is released based on entirely new codebase.

So yes, EW for Mac came first, followed by EW for Win which became EnCase.

regards,

farmerdude

I saw a demo of XRY at a recent seminar… The Hardware looks good with Bluetooth/Cable and IR support … Software is fine also… But It is a Pay per use deal… Like $2500 for 10 Uses or they have an Unlimited Use per year program (unk $$) .. In Law Enforcement when you are pulling out harrasing Emails or IM's the only cost you can really justify is the Officer/Forenisc Guys TIME.. nothing More… It would be different if they were all homicides…but dey ain't! ;-0
