1) Expert Witness for Macintosh

2) Then ported to Windows, Expert Witness for Windows

At this point both gentlemen still friends and partners.

Uh oh, bad mojo, a split occurs, and the great divide is formed.

3) Expert Witness for Windows (just a port of EW for Mac) is changed to "EnCase" and code is the same, eventually maturing over time.

4) SMART for Linux is released based on entirely new codebase.

So yes, EW for Mac came first, followed by EW for Win which became EnCase.
