I have made a few failed attempts at involving the photocopier manufacturers in some research into the forensic investigation of their internal drives. Not surprisingly, this reached a dead end. They have very little to gain if it is shown that these devices are a potential source of data security breaches.
I have heard stories from the sales reps that the refurbished machines that are either sold on or re-leased are not properly wiped, so plenty of potential for data from the original customer to be on the drive. Would be a good research topic for some enthusiatic youngster (I am the former but no the latter!)
