Are you sure what the files contain on movies?

MP4/3GP etc
Most videos, when recorded on a camera are not recorded in sequence. Typically, the mdat is stored physically first, and the ftyp and moov later. If a recovery program tries data carving, one ends up with ftyp+moov from file 1 joined to mdat from file 2. The result is a file that may look correct, but is very wrong.

There are numerous variations in recording and the worst is GoPro where low and high resolution videos are multiplexed together. A Panasonic had all ftyps at the start of the memory, and all mdats at the end. A Sanyo had the moov atom fragmented, and out of sequence, interleaved with the mdat! In all cases, when a file is deleted, or chip reformatted, the FAT is lost, so all allocation data is also lost.

I have added many such cameras to my www.cnwrecovery.com software and am happy to add many more, if you wish top send me a PM. For GoPro I have a dedicated product, www.recovergopro.com

AVI videos are often recorded out of sequence. AVCHD (.MTS) are fragmented, with meta data files inserted in the data stream area. .MXF files appear to be in three, out of sequence fragments.

Re-read what mscotgrove wrote.

S/he is not writing that it is not video, just that it is most likely carved/extracted/recovered incorrectly.
