Hi, I am in a Digital Forensics Program and have a project where I am trying to get information from a Magellan Meridian Gold GPS. The problem I am having is none of the waypoints were saved to the SD card and are on the GPS itself. Unfortunately the GPS is from 2002 and I can not seem to get a computer to recognize it when I hook it up. I had to get a 9 pin serial to USB adapter and that didn't help. Just wondering if anyone has any experience with a situation like this. Thanks in advance.
Does the computer recognize the serial/USB cable? Have you installed the driver for the cable?
Have you tried EasyGPS or similar?

You mean that the GPS has a Serial port?
If this is the case, there is no way that "a computer" can "recognize" it.
You need to use a terminal to connect to the device (with the right bit, stop, parity, etc.) through the right "virtual" port the USB to serial cable driver created.

No, I did install the driver for the cable but my laptop is not recognizing either the serial cable or the GPS.
The GPS doesn't have a serial port just the cable that attaches to connect to a computer. When I first got the GPS I had a tower that had a serial port and could connect that way but no longer have a tower.
I did acquire the SD card with Encase 7.08 but it just brought up the File system and the basemap as a .MGN file type but I can't get the info off of the GPS unit itself other than using "Record a Phone" and getting a physical copy of what I am looking for.
At this point I am going to present what I have and the process I went through plus lessons learned but would like to see if there is a way to get it for my own knowledge.

Regardless of the pinout of the device connected to the serial, the USB to serial (and relative virtual port) needs to be working (without any device connected to it)
It seems like you have either a dead USB to serial adapter or *somehow* you failed toi install the drivers properly, normally a COM3 or COM4 is created.
Still with no devices attached, IF the driver is installed properly and Virtual COM port is installed/accessible, you can try doing a loopback or "paperclip" test
